CHAPTER ONE
Where she came from
Tata was born in Bayamón in 1931, in a wooden house on a street that no longer exists. The street was called Calle Bermúdez then, and the house was small enough that her father could stand in the middle of it and touch both walls if he reached. There were five children. Tata was the third.
Her mother, Doña Carmen, took in laundry, raised the children and kept a kitchen that smelled, Tata said, like every Sunday of her childhood. Sofrito on the stove. Coffee from the colador. Plantains in the pan. The kitchen was the whole house, really. Everything happened there.
“My mother taught me how to feed people. My father taught me how to carry things.”

TATA IS A SAMPLE STORY: A COMPOSITE, NOT A REAL PERSON.
